Curated by Smeaton Constructions
The Nakivubo Channel, once envisioned as a lifeline for Kampala’s drainage, has increasingly become a source of environmental and public health challenges. What was designed to control floods and protect the city from stormwater has now turned into a conduit of waste, pollution, and disease, severely affecting communities and ecosystems around Lake Victoria.
At Smeaton Constructions, we recognize the urgent need to rethink and redesign solutions that go beyond temporary fixes. Uganda deserves modern, sustainable, and environmentally friendly infrastructure, and we are ready to lead that transformation.
The Problem: Nakivubo Channel’s Negative Impact
- Environmental Degradation Industrial waste and untreated sewage flow directly into Lake Victoria, polluting one of Africa’s largest freshwater lakes (National Environment Management Authority Uganda).
- Public Health Risks – Communities around the channel face increased exposure to waterborne diseases (Ministry of Health Uganda).
- Urban Flooding – Poor maintenance and encroachment reduce the channel’s ability to control floods, leaving Kampala vulnerable during heavy rains (KCCA).
- Economic Burden – Recurrent flooding and pollution damage businesses, roads, and housing infrastructure.
Our Vision for Change
At Smeaton Constructions, we believe that the Nakivubo Channel can be transformed from a liability into an asset. Our approach includes:
- Smart Drainage Systems – Upgrading the channel with modern engineering solutions that increase water flow efficiency while minimizing flooding.
- Green Infrastructure – Integrating wetlands, filtration basins, and eco-parks to clean wastewater before it reaches Lake Victoria.
- Community-Centered Planning – Working with Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) and residents to ensure inclusive and sustainable urban development.
- Technology-Driven Monitoring – Using sensors, GIS mapping, and smart controls to monitor waste inflows, blockages, and water quality in real-time.
